Capulin Volcano National Monument

This view is looking toward Capulin Volcano from the north side of the cinder cone. Capulin Volcano is a nearly perfectly shaped cinder cone that rises about 1,200 feet above the surrounding upland plains of northeastern New Mexico. The volcano last erupted about 2,300 years ago but today is considered extinct. The cone rests on older flows that date back many tens of thousands of years. Because of the excellent condition of the volcano, Capulin Volcano National Monument was established in 1916 to preserve this striking example of a volcanic cinder cone.
