Hovenweep National Park
This view of Little Ruins Canyon shows large blocks of Dakota Sandstone that have tumbled into the canyon. A spare pinyon pine and juniper forest grows amongst the sagebrush desert that dominates Cajon Mesa at Hovenweep National Monument. The ancient puebloan dwellers who farmed the upland mesas built well fortified structures along the canyon rim probably as defense against potential raiding enemies competing for the limited resources in the region.
