This view looking south from the Sandstone Bluffs Overlook in El Malpais National Monument. Mt. Taylor with an elevation of 11,301 is in the distance. Mt. Taylor is a large composite volcano that formed roughly between 3.3 and 1.5 million years ago and is part of a larger volcanic field. The Sandstone Bluffs consist of gently dipping, Jurassic and Cretaceous-age sandstone that crops out along the eastern flank of the Cebollita Mesa along the eastern margin of the park. Forests partly mask dark, Quaternary-age lava flows in the valley. |
