It is overlain by the Moenkopi Formation. The lower flank of Ekker Butte is Chinle Formation; the upper portion is Wingate Sandstone. The Moenkopi, Chinle, and Wingate formations are terrestrial sedimentary formations (flood plain and dunes, respectively) of Triassic age, deposited about 220-240 million years ago.
