This view is looking south along the strike of the Waterpocket Fold from
the top of a sandstone outcrop within the Morrison Formation (Jurassic age) along the Notom-Bullfrog
Road. A forest of junipers and pinyon pines thrives on soil formed on ancient volcanic
ash and sand derived from the Morrison Formation. The ridge of sandstone on the left is
the Lower Cretaceous Dakota Sandstone. The white hogback ridge on the right is Navajo Sandstone.
