Carlsbad Caverns National Park
Wildflowers cover the plain of the Delaware Basin. Slaughter Canyon (in the distance) cuts through the southeastern flank of the Guadalupe Mountains, the home to Carlsbad Caverns and many other cave systems. The caverns formed in the reef-track limestones deposited in an ancient seaway system that covered the region during Permian Period, about 280 to 250 million years ago.
