The Carrizo Plain is located in San Luis Obispo County, and part of the extreme northeastern portion is in Kern County. It is a narrow, undulating plain, about 10 miles wide (NE-SW) and 45 miles long (NW-SE). Elevations range from about 1900 feet in the alkali wetland of the Soda Lake basin to about 2500 in the Southern Elkhorn Hills of the extreme southeastern Carrizo Plain. Nearby, McKittrick Peak in Kern County (shown here in the distance) in the Temblor Range is 4,332 feet, and Caliente Mountain, the highest peak in San Luis Obispo County, is 5,106 feet. |
