Alcove in Painted Rock
Both its alcove interior and the exterior sides of Painted Rock have prehistoric rock-art paintings and carvings. Its drawings consist of animals, humans, anthropomorphic figures, horned figures, stars, grids, and other geometric shapes. Animal images include snakes, lizards, birds, insects, turtles, and even seals. The rock art consist of red ocher, black, and white mineral painted pictographs (paintings) and petroglyphs (carvings) have been added to over thousands of years, with new art often superimposed over earlier examples. The oldest are estimated to be about 3000 years old, with the more recent Native American paintings thought to have been added up to about 200 years ago. Other outcrops near the site display mortar pits and other carvings that suggest that the Painted Rock area was inhabited for extended periods of time, probably seasonally.
