The National Park Service has built a wooden boardwalk through the Salt Creek area to help protect the fragile habitat. Pickleweed thrives in areas where briney groundwater is near the surface. Many kinds of seed-eating birds relish the pickleweed's seeds which are produced in great abundance in the winter.
