Artist Drive and Devils Golfcours

This image shows the vicinity of Artist Drive and the Devils Golf Course as it existed in 1948. The trace of the West Side Road can be seen in the lower right hand corner where it crosses the Devils Golf Course, the name for the saltpan in central Death Valley. The white trace of the active valley trunk stream can be seen across the bottom of the image. It is white primarily because of salt (halite) deposition, whereas the older deposits are dark because of dust, organic residues, and other mineral impurities in the salt. Original scale of the image was 1:48,000; north is upt; to see a ground-based image of this area, click here.
