Gray alluvial sediments in the streambed stand out in contrast to the mustard-colored sediments of the Golden Canyon Formation. The contrasting streambed gravel is a result of a fairly recent man-made diversion of Furnace Creek into Gower Gulch near Zabriskie Point.
