Hole-In-The-Wall is a gap in a ridge of near-vertical dipping conglomerate of the Furnace Creek Formation (Pliocene age, about 3 million years). Tectonic forces shaping the Death Valley region have turn to beds of conglomerate (originally formed as alluvial fan deposits) on their side. Ongoing erosion of the landscape has limited the modern stream channel to the gap at Hole-In-The Wall. All the streams in this image drain into Furnace Creek Wash.
