Water floods a ditch carved by the National Park Service along the western side of the Racetrack Playa to keep vehicles off the playa. Ephemeral puddles form in the ditch support brine shrimp. Steeply dipping sedimentary layers of Paleozoic age stand out on the mountainsides south of playa.
