Berkeley area cross section
Click here to open a legend of geology units.
The cross section cuts through the Berkeley Hills (on the right) and the East Bay alluvial plain in the vicinity of the Bay Bridge (on the left). By comparison to the San Leandro area to the south, the body of San Leandro Gabbro pinches out to the north, and the Great Valley Sequence (east of the Hayward Fault) comes in contact with Jurassic ophiolite (mostly serpentinite) and Franciscan Formation rocks (mostly metabasalt, chert, and sandstone).
For more information about geologic names and words in the legend, see glossary definitions (including Coast Range Ophiolite, Franciscan Formation, Great Valley Sequence, geologic time scale, gabbro, serpentinite, alluvium, and more).
