Thousand Palms Wash
Thousand Palm Canyon is a main drainage that cuts through the Indio Hills in the vicinity of the Thousand Palms Oasis (Paul Wilhelm Grove). Indio wash and other streams show recent displacement by both the Mission Creek Branch and Banning Faults, both part of the San Andreas Fault system. On September 10, 1977 nearly 5 inches of rain fell in an hour in the area. The resulting flashfloods nearly destroy the oasis in the valley. The California Aqueduct that runs just north of the preserve was clogged with debris, resulting in the flood of nearly a billion gallons of water through this area.
