| Palo verde, cat-claw acacia, and smoke trees grow in the washes in Painted Canyon. The desert climate experiences infrequent episodic heavy rains, usually in the form of summer thunderstorms that can produce flash floods. Without moisture and associated plant cover, soil has little chance to develop and badlands-style topography develops. |
