| The Teddy-Bear Cholla or "jumping cholla" (Opuntia
bigelovvii) grow in the transition zone between the lower, warmer Colorado
Desert and the higher, cooler Mojave Desert ecosystems. Note: although this
variety of cholla is more ornamentally attractive than other cholla, they
are particularly hazardous to pets and young children. The name "jumping
cholla" is well deserved; the stiff and very sharp barbed spine can
easily become imbedded in shoes and skin. Stay on the trail and do not attempt
to touch the spines or collect the fallen branches! |
