Landslide near Paicines along Highway 25, San Benito County, California

Slump on a grassy hillside
A slump along Highway 25 in valley of the San Benito River south of Paicines in San Benito County. This region has numerous landslides that occur in relatively young and poorly consolidated sediments of both marine and continental origin (Late Miocene to Pliocene age; roughly about 14 to 4 million years old). This rugged valley is a rapidly evolving tectonic setting -it basically follows the trace of the San Andreas Fault Zone.
