Debris flow deposits partly cover a road in Stevens Creek Canyon (Santa Clara County). The debris flow occurred during a storm in late January 2003. Most of the major streams draining the Santa Cruz Mountains were dammed for flood and water resource management; their reservoirs serve as catchment basins for sediments that would otherwise be carried downstream to the alluvial fans that are today completely developed into the South Bay's urban communities.
