Saltpeter mine works in the Rotunda

The largest room in Mammoth Cave is the Rotunda along the Historic Cave Tour route. The name of the room comes from the high, round, dome-shaped ceiling of the cavern passage. Historic mine workings in this portion of the cave is from the extraction of saltpeter (sodium nitrate) for the making of gun powder in the early 1800's.
