Wupatki National Monument
This view is looking north across the lower masonry remains of the Citadel Ruins near the parking area. A sparce juniper and pinyon pine forest covers this section of the plateau at Wupatki National Monument. At the peak of the local "Sinagua" population around 1225 to 1250 AD, many thousands of people may have lived in this area and struggled to sustain themselved through trade and dryland agriculture in the thin, intermittent soils found along stream drainages. In ancient times crop fields must have covered much of the area visible in this photograph.
