Triassic sedimentary rock formations exposed in cliffs at Capitol Reef
National Park, from bottom to top: Moenkopi Formation (brown, layered
siltstone cliffs), Chinle Formation (bluish- to multi-colored, shale-dominated
slope). The Jurassic Wingate Sandstone is the red, massive cliff-forming unit at the top.
This exposure is along Utah Highway 24 between Torrey and the Capitol Reef Visitor Center. Primary sources used for interpretation on this website include Morris and others (2000) and a geologic map by Billingsley and others (1987); see selected references. |
